Cloudy spa water: small volume, fast diagnosis, fast fix
Spa water clouds faster than pool water, and clears faster too. The diagnosis is simpler: 4 likely causes, 4 fixes. Here’s how to clear cloudy spa water in 12 hours.

Last updated: 2 June 2026
Cloudy spa water is one of the fastest pool/spa problems to fix because of the small volume. A 1,500 L spa cycles through its full water volume in 5–10 minutes of pump operation. Compare to a 50,000 L pool that takes hours per turnover. This means correct intervention clears spa water in 12 hours, not 48.
The flip side: spa water clouds faster than pool water for the same reason. A bathing event that would cause minor pool clouding causes major spa clouding.
This guide covers the four common causes, how to diagnose in 10 minutes, and the recovery sequence for each.
The four common causes
| Cause | Confirming test | Recovery time |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Low sanitiser (chlorine or bromine deficit) | FC/bromine below spec | 4–8 hours after dosing |
| 2. High pH with high calcium (precipitate) | pH > 7.8, CH > 250 ppm | 2–6 hours after lowering pH |
| 3. Filter cartridge clogged | Visible debris in filter | 2–4 hours after cleaning |
| 4. Fine particulate / high TDS | TDS > 1,500 above fill | Drain only |
Diagnostic sequence, 10 minutes
Test in this order:
- Free chlorine or bromine. Below 3 ppm = cause #1.
- pH. Above 7.8 + CH above 250 = cause #2.
- Pull the filter cartridge. Heavily fouled = cause #3.
- Combined chlorine (chlorine spas) or visible water age (oil sheen, hint of yellow). High = cause #4, plan drain.
Don’t add anything before completing this, adding the wrong chemical to the wrong cause makes things worse.
Cause 1: Low sanitiser
What’s happening
FC or bromine has dropped below the threshold needed to keep up with bather load. Microscopic organic matter is accumulating. The cloudiness is the visible mass of these compounds.
Fix
- If pH is above 7.6, lower to 7.4 first.
- Shock with chlorine: target FC = max(10 × CC, 20 ppm) for a chlorine spa. For a bromine spa, add MPS at the recommended dose plus 50% bromide reserve check.
- Run jets continuously for 4 hours with lid open (for off-gassing).
- Re-test at 4 hours, 8 hours, 12 hours. Water should clear within 12 hours.
Cause 2: High pH calcium precipitate
What’s happening
pH has drifted above 7.8 and calcium is precipitating as microscopic crystals. The cloudiness is calcium carbonate suspended in water.
Fix
- Lower pH to 7.2 with dry acid (~10 g per 1,500 L drops pH 0.2).
- Run jets continuously for 2 hours, the precipitated calcium will redissolve OR get caught by the filter.
- Re-test at 4 hours.
- If CH is >350 ppm, plan a partial drain, calcium can’t be removed any other way.
Cause 3: Filter cartridge clogged
What’s happening
The filter isn’t capturing particulates because it’s already saturated with oils and contaminants. Water cycles through but isn’t being cleaned.
Fix
- Remove the cartridge.
- Hose it down thoroughly, working into the pleats.
- For heavy fouling, soak in TSP solution overnight (next day, rinse and reinstall).
- Run jets for 2 hours after reinstall, water should clear visibly.
Cause 4: Old water / high TDS
What’s happening
The water has accumulated enough total dissolved solids that chemistry can’t keep up. Common after 3–4 months of regular use without draining.
Fix
Drain and refill. There’s no chemical fix. After refilling:
- Re-establish chemistry from scratch.
- Run jets for 2 hours to fully circulate.
- Test all parameters and adjust to spec.
Recovery times by cause
| Cause | Spa size 1,500 L | Spa size 2,500 L |
|---|---|---|
| Low sanitiser | 4–8 hours | 6–12 hours |
| High pH calcium | 2–6 hours | 4–8 hours |
| Clogged filter | 2–4 hours | 3–6 hours |
| Drain required | 2–4 hours (post-refill) | 3–6 hours (post-refill) |
What not to do
- Don’t add clarifier as a first response. Clarifier is helpful only after the underlying cause is fixed.
- Don’t shock without diagnosing. Shocking a calcium-precipitate cloudy spa makes the precipitate worse.
- Don’t enter a cloudy spa. Visibility is too low; you also don’t know what’s making it cloudy.
- Don’t run the jets at full power immediately after shocking. The off-gassing from high chlorine can irritate. Open the lid first.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my hot tub water cloudy?
Four common causes: low sanitiser, high pH causing calcium precipitate, clogged filter cartridge, or old water at high TDS. Test FC/bromine, pH, calcium hardness, and inspect the filter, the right cause determines the right fix.
How long does it take to clear cloudy spa water?
Most causes clear within 4–8 hours after correct treatment. High pH calcium precipitate clears in 2–6 hours after lowering pH. Old water requiring drain takes only 2–4 hours after refill. Spa water clears much faster than pool water because of the smaller volume.
Should I shock my hot tub if water is cloudy?
Only if you’ve confirmed the cause is sanitiser-related (low FC or high combined chlorine). Shocking a calcium-precipitate cloudy spa worsens the problem. Always test before treating.
Can I add clarifier to clear my hot tub?
Use clarifier only after fixing the underlying cause. Clarifier binds fine particulate so the filter can catch it, but if your filter is clogged or your chemistry is wrong, the clarifier won’t help.
When should I drain my hot tub instead of trying to clear it?
When TDS exceeds 1,500 ppm above fill water, when water hasn’t been drained in 3+ months, or when cloudiness persists after addressing all the other causes. Hot tubs need draining every 3–4 months regardless of how the water looks.
Will the Water Test Calculator app help diagnose cloudy spa water?
Yes. The app’s spa diagnostic asks for current readings (FC, pH, CH) and water age, then identifies the most likely cause and walks through the specific fix. Launching on iOS and Android in approximately 10 days.
